Section outline

  • Welcome to School of Latin's Introduction to Latin course!  This is the only course on the Internet teaching independent homeschoolers to read, write, and speak Latin (this not just a Latin translation course!).  This first section is an introduction to the materials needed for the course and to the pronunciation of the Latin language.

  • Week 1

Lingua Latina Per Se Illustrata: Chapter 1 contains three reading lessons (marked in the book with a Roman Numeral in the right-hand margin) and one grammar lesson. Each lesson is organized into five sessions. This week, we'll be working on Lesson 1.

    • Session One

Open your workbook (print out the workbook pages here) to Chapter 1 - Lesson 1 - Session 1. Each week has 5 sessions. If you plan to complete Latin I in one year, you will want to complete all 5 sessions in one week. If you are working at your own pace, you can decide how many you would like to complete each day.

    • Sing along, learn the motions, and take the practice quiz under the song to prepare for this week's grammar quiz.

    • Participate in this conversation to learn some of the new vocabulary and grammar for this lesson.

    • Listen to and recite the lines assigned to this Session. To build your Latin fluency, remember that you need to read every word out loud.

    • Translate!
Translate the lines indicated in your workbook without using any resources (no dictionaries, no online resources, etc.). Use the margin notes and context clues in your book to guess the meanings of new words.

    • Use this recording to correct your English translation. Add any unknown words to your "Words to Know" list at the bottom of your workbook page.

    • Reverse translate!

After correcting your translation, translate it back into Latin. When you get stuck, you can look back at the book, but try to do it from memory. Use a different color pen to correct the words and endings that you get wrong. Remember, word order doesn't matter, so only fix incorrect words and endings.

  • Note: This week's reading lesson combines two short sessions. You should be able to complete this lesson in one day because the translations are short and there are no reverse translations. You may choose to combine the conversations, recitations, translations, and corrections (i.e. participate in all three conversations, and then recite, translate, and correct the whole lesson at once), if that is more efficient for you.

  • Today you will begin preparing for the National Latin Exam in March. The National Latin Exam (NLE) is an exam like the SAT that will test your abilities in Latin. It is not linked to any one curriculum, so there are certain grammar and vocabulary items on the test that you will not have seen at this point in your textbook. You will attempt to overcome this deficit by completing the NLE research project and correcting a few practice tests. If you put in the effort over the next few weeks, you should expect a decent score on the test, and maybe even an award.

Each week will be divided into three days devoted to the grammar project and two days devoted to the practice tests. Begin by making your own copy of the "NLE - Latin 1 (Introduction) - Project" document.

    • Session One

    • Make your own copy of this Google Doc called "NLE - Latin 1 (Introduction) - Project." To make your own copy of the document, click "File" and then "Make a Copy". The instructions for the project are on the document.

    • Sing the hyperlinked songs and answer questions 1-6 in the Parts of Speech and Noun sections of the project. You may want to download a the .pdf of Kennedy's Latin Grammar below to help you with your research as you answer these questions.

First, download the National Latin Exam practice test packet with test corrections that is linked here. Today, you'll begin by taking the 2024 test and completing Parts I and II on the test correction page. Instructions for the corrections are on the document. The test and corrections should take about one hour. Don't forget to save the translation (Part III of the test correction sheet) for Day 5!
